The convict starts from a natural gathering point and hides within a given
section of woods. After five minutes all start out after him, no one being
permitted to stay nearer than 100 yards from the starting point. The convict
may either hide or move from place to place within his territory. If he remains unseen or gets back to the starting place without being
touched, he wins. If seen he races for the starting point and all raise a hue
and cry, trying to intercept him before he gets back. The first man to see him
is convict next time.

The purpose of this Website is to provide access
to hard to find, out-of-print documents. Much of the
content has been edited to be of practical use in today's world and is not
intended as historical preservation. I will be happy to provide
scans of specific short passages in the original documents for people involved in
academic research.
