Many special programs of the Troop or Council involve winter camp features. One of the most popular of these is the patriotic pilgrimage to a neighboring historical site. These occur at any time during the year, but are particularly appropriate in connection with the Anniversary Week Program in February. These programs are often combined with an over-night camp, as in the case of the once annual February 22nd Valley Forge Pilgrimage, when Philadelphia Scouts would camp on the historic site of the Revolutionary soldiers. Such a camp involves a special program and special activities. These historic pilgrimages form a unique feature of the Scout Program and are a fine incentive to Scouts towards good citizenship, bonding them with their country's history. There is hardly a community so poor in traditions that it does not furnish an opportunity for at least one such hike or camp. If community support is enlisted and citizens are drawn into the program, a general awakening of public interest will result. As a feature of their Anniversary Week celebration, La Junto, Colorado, Scouts one year conducted a Kit Carson Pilgrimage. The journey was made in an old stage coach and covered the route over which the former pioneer traveled. A large part of the. community took part, and impressive services were scheduled at the old house of Kit Carson, to which point the pilgrimage was made. The Lincoln Centennial Association awarded a certificate to the Scout who treads the same path as trod by Abraham Lincoln so many years ago when he walked from old Salem to Springfield and carried back with him two volumes of Blackstone. The distance is about twenty-five miles. |
